SYNOPSIS
As a true masterpiece of American literature, Louisa May Alcott’s heartwarming story of the March sisters – traditional eldest Meg, creative spitfire Jo, gentle homebody Beth, and ambitious artist Amy – has enjoyed countless revivals and re-imaginings over the century and a half since its initial publication, but Kate Hamill’s take on these beloved characters sees them revisited through a more modern and feminist lens that imbues new warmth, humor, and perspective into this classic coming-of-age tale.
Departing from the more idealized romanticism of the source material in favor of a more realistic and socially conscious interpretation, this bold retelling embraces a warm but cheekier sense of humor and a more honest and unflinching depiction of the feminine experience.
Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, which keeps their father away as he serves in the Union army, the March sisters must learn to cope with all the hardships accompanying the political, economic, and social landscape of the time and find ways to balance private ambition with societal expectation as they each navigate all the many pains, prides, and perils that accompany their evolution from young girls to little women.
